An airborne utility truck landed in an Atascadero backyard on Friday afternoon, just missing two residents who had been in the yard moments before, police said.
Around 12:20 p.m., authorities responded to a 911 call at the 5000 block of Via Colonia Court.
An AT&T utility truck had flipped over and caught fire in the yard near Del Rio and San Ramon roads, police said.
Jeff and Bonnie Foster had been standing in the backyard but went inside their home to eat lunch just before the crash, authorities said.
Never miss a local story.
"They said they were walking in the back door of their residence when they heard the crash and turned around and saw the vehicle in the air," police said.
The Fosters told police that the vehicle landed "right where they had been standing just moments before."
The Atascadero Fire Department extinguished the fire and used two sets of the Jaws of Life to free the driver, who was the only person in the truck. He was taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton with major injuries, police said, including broken bones, burns and internal injuries.
The driver's name hasn't been released, and his condition wasn't known Friday afternoon.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
