A 1976 Cal Poly graduate has been named the new senior commander at Camp Roberts, the California National Guard announced last week.
Brig. Gen. Keith Jones began his assignment at the training base just north of Paso Robles on June 1. He was previously commander of National Guard’s Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos. Brig. Gen. Jones began his military career as an enlisted infantry soldier in 1971 before receiving his commission in 1973 through the California Military Academy, officials said.
He graduated from Cal Poly with a bachelor of science degree in city and regional planning. He also graduated from the Army War College and holds a master’s degree in public administration from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.
A search for his replacement in Los Alamitos was launched in recent weeks, and National Guard officials hope to announce his successor in the next few weeks, they said.

The California National Guard has nearly 2,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It has deployed more than 35,000 soldiers and aircrews overseas in the last 10 years, officials said.
