UPDATE 2:43 p.m.: The Sheriff's Department has identified the man killed in the crash as Michael Joe Bishop, 56, of Marina, Calif.
Original story:A 56-year-old man was killed late Thursday night near Paso Robles when he tried to flee from a CHP officer who was attempting to check the man for driving under the influence.
According to the CHP, the man had been stopped by the officer at the Wellsona Road truck stop between Paso Robles and San Miguel at 11 p.m. The driver then sped off south on Highway 101 with the CHP officer in pursuit.
As the driver entered a curve north of 24th Street, his vehicle, a 1990 Mercedes-Benz, drifted into the median and crashed through oleander bushes. The man, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the car and landed in the median. CPR was administered, but the man died at the scene, the CHP said.
