Central Coast congressional Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, will visit French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo on Thursday to tell her constituents why she thinks the Republican plan “to end Medicare as we know it” is bad for them.
French CEO Alan Iftiniuk will join her, as will representatives from AARP and some local seniors. The event will take place between 11 and 11:30 a.m. at the hospital, 1911 Johnson Ave.
The Republican proposal would end the current Medicare system and give future seniors a voucher to partially subsidize the purchase of a private insurance plan.
The value of the voucher, Capps contends, would not cover the full cost of an insurance plan, assuming one is available.
Should the GOP plan become law, Capps wrote, seniors would have “no protection from the worst abuses of the health insurance industry.” They would have “to fend for themselves on the private insurance market.”
Capps represents San Luis Obispo and coastal portions of the county.
