A Coast Union High softball game is believed to have set a national record for most combined runs scored in a game when the Broncos lost to Cuyama Valley 48-47 today in a Coast Valley League game.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations record book, the previous record of 94 combined runs was set April 28, 1983, when East Machias Washington Academy (Mass.) defeated Lubec 88-6. East Machias also set the record for runs scored by a single team in the game.
Tuesday’s game, which lasted 3 1/2 hours, was such a feat that it was even mentioned on ESPN's SportsCenter on Tuesday night.
Coast Union, which was 0-15 entering the contest, held a 47-35 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but Cuyama Valley rallied to earn the walkoff win and put both teams in the record books.
Coast Union’s Morgan May, who hit for the cycle, was 6 for 7 with 14 RBI.
