Newly appointed County/Cal Fire local unit Chief Robert Lewin has appointed longtime firefighter Rick Swan as deputy chief, his second-in-command.
Swan, who was division chief, is Lewin’s first appointment since recently being made permanent unit chief for San Luis Obispo County following his interim appointment in the fall, according to the agency’s Sunday announcement.
Cal Fire’s local unit covers fire protection services for most unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County, the city of Pismo Beach and the community services districts in Los Osos and Avila Beach.
Swan and Lewin first worked together as firefighters at Cal Fire’s Nipomo station in 1980, according to the announcement.
Swan has more than three decades of fire service experience, working in several Cal Fire units around California. He has been an air tactical officer, a station and crew captain, and more recently has also been a battalion chief and fire marshal for San Luis Obispo County.
