Pismo Beach police identified the man who fell off a 40-foot cliff onto the rocks in Shell Beach on Monday as Francois Hughes.
Hughes fell off a cliff at the end of Boeker Street around 4 p.m., Rick Howard, a captain with Cal Fire in Pismo Beach, said Monday.
Pismo Beach police Cmdr. Jake Miller said today the incident appears to be accidental, but police are continuing to investigate other possibilities. Miller said police talked to Hughes at the scene but that he was unable to give officers a statement.
Hughes, who is in his 40s and lives in Shell Beach, was taken to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital after rescuers hiked down the cliff and brought him up on a stretcher.
