UPDATE 3:43 p.m. Farmers Market is canceled today because of bad weather.
Original story: The San Luis Obispo City Fire Department and the American Red Cross have postponed tonight's "Pass the Helmet" event, planned to collect donations for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, because of the looming storm.
The event has been rescheduled for next week's Farmers Market, 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 31 at the corner of Chorro and Higuera streets in San Luis Obispo.
“The generosity of this community to help those in need has always been second to none, and we would like to invite everyone to join us at Farmers Market and place any donation possible into a fire helmet in support of the people of Japan whose basic necessities of life like food and clean water are running out quickly,” Battalion Chief Dave Podhorsky stated in a news release.
The fire department is also encouraging community members to create or improve their existing disaster preparedness kits. For more details on those kits, visit www.slocity.org/fire/preparation.asp.
