ANAHEIM — Cal Poly's women's basketball team couldn't overcome 23 turnovers today and lost 66-49 to UC Davis in the Big West Conference Tournament championship game at the Honda Center.
The Aggies (24-8) earned the Big West's automatic — and likely only — NCAA Tournament berth. UC Davis will be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Cal Poly has never advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Cal Poly (18-12) will advance to postseason play despite the loss. As the regular-season conference champs, the Mustangs automatically qualify for the women's NIT.
UC Davis scored 20 points off Cal Poly's 23 turnovers as the Mustangs struggled the entire game against the Aggies' zone defense. Cal Poly shot 32.1 percent from the field, making 17 of 53 shots.
Rachel Clancy was the only Cal Poly player to score in double figures with 20 points. Desiray Johnston added nine on three 3-pointers.
UC Davis led 35-22 at halftime. Cal Poly made a run in the second half to get within five points but get no closer. The Aggies then pulled away over the final eight minutes.
Paige Mintun scored 20 points for UC Davis. Teammate Vicky Deely had 12 points in four 3-pointers.
Cal Poly and UC Davis split the regular-season series with each team winning on its home court.
