Urbane Café, a Southern California-based restaurant known for its gourmet sandwiches and salads, is coming to downtown San Luis Obispo.
The café will open in late July at 952 Higuera St., the space previously occupied by San Luis Surf and Meridian furniture store.
About 25 employees will staff the restaurant, which already has locations in San Diego, Valencia, Ventura, Oxnard and Agoura Hills.
Owner Tom Holt, a former motorcycle racer who lives in Ventura, opened his first restaurant in 2003 in Ventura. He had been looking for a spot in San Luis Obispo for more than a year. When the 2,800-square-foot location became available, he decided to go for it.
“I think our product and our concept is just perfect for that area,” said Holt, adding that San Luis Obispo’s downtown attracts crowds looking for healthy lunch fare.
Urbane Café features bread baked on site in a hearth and other items made from scratch.
Before it opens, the space will get a makeover, Holt said.
“We’ll do a total redo on the inside,” he said. “On the outside, we will push back the storefront and put a little patio right there. It gets nice sun, and it will be great during Farmers Market because people can sit out there and eat. It will have a good vibe.”
