Cal Poly is hosting Explore the Oceans Day from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the Avila Beach Sea Life Center.
Biology students will lead hands-on ocean activities appropriate for children of all ages. Touchable exhibits include a tank of local tide pool creatures, marine skeletons, and beach buckets full of shore treasures.
The educational event also offers the chance to hold a sea urchin and get a lesson in seaweed types.
The students will return to the center Feb. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m., offering more program activities and exhibits.
The cost of the event is $3 per person, but children age 2 and under get in free. The center is at 50 San Juan St. in Avila Beach.
