The owner of a Foothill Boulevard restaurant whose neighbors complain he has turned the eatery into a de facto nightclub faces the loss of his license.
Andrew Adams, who owns The Clubhouse at This Old House at 740 Foothill Road, is scheduled to go before the Planning Commission on Friday to explain why the county should not yank his license or, at a minimum, further restrict his activities at the site.
The commission meeting begins at 9 a.m., and the Old House hearing is the last scheduled item of the day.
Neighbors from eight addresses on nearby Johe Lane and Guerra Drive have complained that Adams, who has owned the venue since 2007, runs his establishment “primarily as an entertainment-based nightclub rather than a restaurant.”
In a letter to the county they complained of loud music, played well beyond the hours his permit allows – 10 p.m. weeknights and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
They wrote that their attempts to call Adams and his employees to complain often failed to get through and, when they did, they were sometimes met with the reply that the music would end soon, or was not really loud. “In some cases, music volume increased after calls were made,” according to the letter.
The neighbors also wrote that they fear Adams intends to “develop the adjacent parcel into a soccer field/outdoor music venue and landscaped outdoor wedding facility” with a bar.
All of that, they wrote, is “unsuitable to the rural character of our residential area.”
Art Trinidade of the county code enforcement office wrote that the neighbors are “often met with hostility and no cooperation.”
Neighbors included a log of complaints to and responses by the Sheriff’s Department. However, some sheriff’s deputies reported that they went to the complainant’s home and could barely hear the alleged loud music.
In at least one instance, Adams called the Sheriff to complain about a neighbor’s “annoying phone calls.”
Neighbors who wrote the letter of complaint are Robert and Sara Sloan; Thomas and Juliette Meinhold; Suzette Girouard; Gene and Melanie Johe; Mark and Laurie Zohn; Martin and Christine Labuda; Jeff and Cindy Rattigan; Fay McKaye; Todd and Michelle Thomas; and David and Pam Hudgens.View Larger Map
