About 450 area high school students participated last weekend in the Central Coast Classic Marching Band Field Competition, held at Arroyo Grande High School.
Paso Robles High School took overall honors in Saturday competition, event chairwoman Theresa Schultz said, followed by first-time participants Pioneer Valley High School and Righetti High School, both in Santa Maria.
A four-person panel judged the bands based on musicianship, performance and other factors.
Paso Robles earned awards in the percussion and auxiliary categories, while Pioneer Valley won the visual category. San Luis Obispo High School won the music category.
Never miss a local story.
Now in its ninth year, the event is a fundraiser for the Arroyo Grande High School Band Boosters.
“It was so wonderful to see how well these bands did, to see the excitement in these kids’ faces,” Schultz said. “A big part of it for us is getting music in the community and showcasing our band and other bands.”
Although Arroyo Grande did not compete Saturday, the marching band performed its 2010 field show, “In Perpetuum.”
