Never miss a local story.
Just before 2 p.m., the Morro Bay Fire Department, city Harbor Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard were summoned to the sand spit that separates the bay from the Pacific Ocean, south of the harbor mouth.
There, they found that a boat with three people aboard had capsized in the surf, the Fire Department reported.
In a rescue watercraft, fire and Harbor Patrol rescuers were first to reach the scene, about 2:07 p.m., where they found two people on the beach and a third person in the surf, according to the Fire Department.
As the first two boaters were taken to area hospitals, the third was being loaded onto a Coast Guard vessel, according to authorities. San Luis Ambulance medics treated that boater, who was also hospitalized.
That boater was pronounced dead at an undisclosed area hospital, according to the Fire Department. None of the boaters had lifejackets.
Authorities have not disclosed any other information on the incident, such as the circumstances that led to the capsizing or the identities of the boaters.
