Members of Arroyo Grande High’s Link Crew on Friday continued its efforts to break the ice with the freshman class by assembling a special treat: a 100-foot-long banana split.
“It’s mainly to show the freshman that we aren’t scary upperclassmen, we’re here to help them,” said Timothy Metcalfe, a high school senior and Link Crew member.
Link Crew is a program created to welcome freshman and new students to the high school. Juniors and seniors are trained to serve as leaders and mentors to the freshman for the entire year. Some 135 Link Leaders serve about 500 freshmen.
Link Crew members solicited donations of bananas, whipped cream, chocolate syrup and ice cream from local grocery stores. They assembled the banana split on the high school’s quad during lunch Friday.
