Sixty-two people have applied to be the next fire chief in San Luis Obispo.
The application period closed Sept. 10.
The city is currently screening applicants and select candidates will then be invited to attend a comprehensive interview with City Manager Katie Lichtig and other city department heads in mid-October.
Lichtig said a new fire chief will likely be hired in November.
“I continue to have confidence that the recruitment process will result in the selection of someone who will have a great mix of technical and leadership skills along with commitment to service to the community,” said Lichtig of the applicant pool.
Former Fire Chief John Callahan, 61, died of a heart attack Aug. 18. He had announced plans to retire in November – initiating the recruitment process.
Greg West, a retired assistant chief from the Los Angeles department and close friend of Callahan’s, is serving as the interim acting chief until a replacement is hired.
