A Cambria man was under the influence of marijuana and methamphetamine when he died after crashing his car head-on into another vehicle on Highway 1 near Cayucos Aug. 18, according to toxicology testing results released Thursday by the CHP.
Three other people suffered major injuries in the accident near San Geronimo Road.
Fernando "Nico" Rafael Mendoza, 27, was driving a 1992 Toyota Camry northbound, reportedly faster than 55 miles per hour when he attempted to pass slower traffic, according to CHP spokesman Joe Vega.
It took an hour and 40 minutes to get Mendoza out of the wreckage, the CHP said. He was transported by helicopter to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, where he was pronounced dead.
