The county Sheriff’s Department Marine Unit had to help 12 people ashore at Nacimiento Lake after their ski boat sank Sunday afternoon.
The boat appeared to be overloaded, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
When it was traversing the 5 mph area near a crowded part of the lake, a wave current struck the boat and flooded it, causing it to go nose down in seven feet of water, officials said.
Everyone on the boat made it to shore safely, according to authorities, including its operator — who told rescuers that he could not swim but had a flotation device.
Overloaded vessels hit by waves is the main cause of boat sinking at Nacimiento, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Monterey County park rangers are to investigate the sinking, authorities said.
