The Coast Guard and other agencies on Tuesday suspended their search for a Morro Bay man reported missing in Big Sur.
Randall Young, 51, was reported missing Monday when he failed to return from a camping trip to Big Sur. He left Wednesday for a camping trip to Plaskett Creek Campground but failed to return by Sunday noon as expected.
The Coast Guard suspended the search Tuesday night pending further developments.
A friend went looking for Young at the campground Sunday afternoon but did not find any of his belongings. However, Young’s vehicle was found on a nearby road.
Never miss a local story.
The Coast Guard was brought into the search because a white kayak that Young brought with him was missing. A kayak similar to Young’s was found by a local resident at a beach but authorities have not been able to determine if it is Young’s.
The Coast Guard launched a 47-foot motor life boat from Morro Bay which conducted an 80-mile shoreline search. An 87-foot cutter from Bodega Bay was also dispatched for searches.
Two Coast Guard helicopters were deployed to do aerial searches. No signs of distress have been discovered.
Young is described as a 6 foot, 3 inch tall white male. Anyone with information is urged to call the Monterey County Sheriff's Department at 831-647-7702 or Coast Guard at 510-437-3701.
