A garbage truck crashed and ended up on its side, blocking both lanes of Highway 1 just north of San Luis Obispo shortly after 6:30 Thursday morning.
The truck crashed in the northbound lanes just south of the entrance to the California Men's Colony, according to the CHP. Traffic was backed up for a half-mile five minutes after the crash was reported.
Two people were thought to be trapped inside the vehicle. An ambulance was called to the scene, and major injuries were reported.
By 6:50 a.m., traffic was able to get through a small opening on the left side of the road, according to the CHP.
The tow truck trying to get to the crash was stuck in traffic at 7:43 a.m.
The road reopened just before 9 a.m., according to the CHP, but authorities requested notifications remain in place for a half-hour due to traffic being backed up to the San Luis Obispo city limits.
