An 82-year-old Arroyo Grande man was arrested after he allegedly kidnapped a 6-month-old girl whose mother had reportedly been staying in his home.
Grover Beach police say Peter Hewitt took the baby from the Vons supermarket parking lot at 1758 W. Grand Ave. just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The baby’s mother, Jennifer Kim, 35, reported the incident as she followed Hewitt’s car in another vehicle with an unrelated person.
When police arrived at Hewitt’s Arroyo Grande home at 1131 Fair Oaks Ave., the address for which had been provided by the mother, they reportedly found Hewitt in the garage and locked inside his car, holding the baby.
After entering the garage, police had to pull the baby from Hewitt and returned her to her mother. No one was harmed during the struggle.

Hewitt was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, child endangerment and resisting arrest. He remained Wednesday night at County Jail on $100,000 bail.
Hewitt’s neighbor, LaFon Kellerman, 81, met the man more than a decade ago when he moved into his Arroyo Grande home, which is directly behind her house.
Kellerman was baking cookies in her kitchen and listening to her personal police scanner Tuesday night when she heard police being directed to Hewitt’s residence. She later heard a baby crying and saw the street lined with police cars.
Kellerman said Hewitt met Kim at their Nipomo church, where Hewitt played the organ and sang in the choir.
Kim moved into Hewitt’s home about six days ago, Kellerman said.
Kellerman said she was told by one of Hewitt’s sons that Hewitt helped Kim financially.
Attempts to reach Kim were unsuccessful.
