The university ranks third in the nation for having the highest total enrollment in study abroad programs, according to a recent survey of similar institutions conducted by the Institute of International Education.
The Open Doors 2009 Report on International Education Exchange found that Cal Poly sent a total of 877 students to study abroad during the 2007-08 academic year.
Cal Poly is ranked in the category of “universities that offer master’s degrees (nondoctoral universities).”
Never miss a local story.
John Battenburg, Cal Poly’s International Education and Programs director, said that study abroad is important in exposing students to global cultures as they enter a diverse workforce.
The annual report, published by the Institute of International Education, listed Cal Poly behind two peer institutions — Elon University and James Madison University.
The study noted that American college students receiving credit for study abroad increased by 8.5 percent from the previous year, reaching a record total of 262,416 students.

City Manager Ken Hampian has appointed Elaina Cano the new city clerk.
Cano replaces Audrey Hooper, who recently retired.
She has worked in the clerk’s office since 2004, and she had served as interim city clerk before the appointment. While Hooper was still in the position, Cano served as her deputy.
The City Council decided in the spring budget process to take full department head status away from the city clerk position. It is now a division under the supervision of the City Manager’s Office.
