San Luis Obispo police will hold a DUI checkpoint from 8 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of Higuera Street, the department announced Thursday afternoon.
Checkpoints are generally placed in specific locations based on collision statistics and frequency of past DUI arrests, as well as public and officer safety considerations.
San Luis Obispo police Sgt. Fred Mickel said in the news release that DUI crashes have claimed two lives and resulted in 52 collisions injuring 62 people in the city within the last three years.
Officers will be checking drivers for signs of illegal, prescription and over-the-counter drug impairment in addition to alcohol intoxication.
