Throughout the Labor Day weekend, motorists will be able to pass through a stretch of Highway 1 in northern San Luis Obispo and southern Monterey counties currently undergoing overnight closures for a construction project.
Overnight closures on the stretch of highway between Gorda and Ragged Point began June 22 and are tentatively scheduled to continue through the end of November as crews build a retaining wall to curb frequent rock slides.
Due to the holiday weekend, the highway will remain open throughout the night beginning Thursday evening and ending Wednesday morning, according to the California Department of Transportation.
Roadwork normally takes place between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Sunday nights through Friday mornings.
Once the closures resume, motorists traveling the stretch are asked to plan to reach their destinations before 10 p.m.
Local businesses along the coast remain open during the construction.
