United Blood Services is asking donors to give blood over the next two weeks to ensure there’s enough blood on hand for the Labor Day weekend and the following week.
While donations of all blood types are encouraged, donors with type O-negative are especially needed because inventories of type O-negative blood are low, the nonprofit blood center said.
Type O-negative blood is found in just 6 percent of the population and can be transfused to anyone. It is often transfused in emergency and trauma situations when there is little time to “type” a patient’s blood.
Donors will receive a coupon for a free medium one-topping pizza from Domino’s. All blood donors also will receive points for rewards, according to a news release. More information is available at https://www.blood4life.org.
In San Luis Obispo County, donations can be made at 4119 Broad St., Suite 100. There are also locations in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Ventura. Donors are asked to contact United Blood Services at 877-827-4376 or online to make an appointment, though walk-ins are accepted.
