San Luis Obispo County parents and caretakers of small children are welcome to a free “Car Seat Check Up” event offering seat inspections and professional advice on which child restraints are most effective.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 3 in the Target parking lot at 11990 Los Osos Valley Road in San Luis Obispo, the SLO County Injury Prevention Coalition will provide free inspections for proper child car seat installation as well as provide information on selecting the right car seats and how to install them properly.
Representatives from the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department, the California Highway Patrol and community members who are certified car seat technicians will be on hand to answer questions from the public.
The Health Department said in a news release Thursday that vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 3 years old and using the correct restraints reduces infants’ and toddlers’ chances for fatal injury by 71 percent and 54 percent in passenger cars, respectively.
