Outdoor enthusiasts interested in hiking up to the Cal Poly “P” will have to wait at least a few more months because of continued safety concerns.
The university announced this week access to the hiking trails, staging area and hillside adjacent to the popular landmark on the eastern side of campus will remain closed until January.
Weather-related erosion last spring disrupted the stability of the hillside, as did the Poly Fire that burned more than 100 acres of vegetation in September.
The renovation project was originally scheduled to be completed Oct. 30.
The university said Tuesday the “current repair area and fire affected zones are very sensitive to foot traffic” and the area will “remain unsafe until winter rains help to establish new growth.”
Access is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. on Jan. 8, the university said, but changes in restriction may be modified as conditions change.
An update notification will be sent if a partial restriction becomes possible or the closure is extended, according to the school.
