The French Hospital Medical Center Foundation recently honored former San Luis Obispo City Manager John Dunn and his wife, Sandy Dunn, for their continued philanthropic commitment to the community.
The Dunns received the Louis Tedone Humanitarian Award — an award created in 2006 in honor of the county’s first pediatrician. Tedone was the first recipient, honored for a lifetime dedication to health care and improving the community’s health.
The award recognizes the contributions of individuals toward creating a healthier community, according to French Hospital Foundation Vice President of Philanthropy Debby Nicklas. Other recipients include Stephen T. Hearst (2008), Phyllis Madonna (2010) and Jim Sargen (2012).
The Dunns were the second couple to win the award. Both have served as chairs on various boards for French Hospital — John on the hospital’s Community Board and Sandy on the Foundation Board.
“They’ve both shaped French Hospital in many ways for so many years,” Nicklas said.
In addition to playing integral roles in French Hospital leadership, the couple has been involved in numerous other charities and organizations, Nicklas said, from the Performing Arts Center to the Women’s Shelter Program of San Luis Obispo County, almost every part of San Luis Obispo.
“I truly believe they define the word ‘humanitarian,’ ” Nicklas said. “They love it. They love volunteering.”
