Red Hot Pottery, the San Luis Obispo paint-your-own pottery studio, will close its doors Friday.
The business first opened 13 years ago on Chorro Street and was a fixture in the downtown until it relocated to the Laguna Lake Shopping Center on Madonna Road in October.
Chris Detrick, who co-owns the shop with his wife, Monica, said that declining sales and the high cost of rent led to their decision to close the business.
“We had 12 years downtown and we did well down there,” Detrick said. “With rent getting to be so high and with business stagnant we decided to move. That was a real learning experience.”
Never miss a local story.
Detrick said business declined about 25 percent once the business relocated, with some longtime customers thinking that the business had closed. The couple found themselves struggling to keep the business profitable because they didn’t have the money to put into marketing the shop’s new location, he said.
“We thought we would get a lot of foot traffic, but there was no real draw there for us,” Detrick said. “Business was very steady, but lower than where we needed it to be on a regular basis.”
Detrick estimates that an additional three customers a day would have kept them in business.
Customers who still have products to pick up can do so by early next week. However, the store will close to new customers Friday.
Detrick said that the business is for sale as is their stock of kilns, tables and chairs, shelves, glass display cases and other inventory.
