Spencer’s Fresh Markets announced Wednesday that its Atascadero store will close this summer because its building lease ends Aug. 31, according to a news release.
All of the store's employees will be offered positions in one of the grocer's other existing locations, the news release said. The number of people employed at the store, at 8665 El Camino Real, wasn't immediately available.
After the Atascadero store closes, there will be three Spencer's stores on the Central Coast — in San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay and Santa Maria.
The move comes after the local owner John Spencer closed the company's Arroyo Grande location in July 2012, also because of an expiring building lease. Spencer said at the time that he planned to relocate to another storefront in the Five Cities area, but further details on those plans have not been disclosed.
Never miss a local story.
It appears Spencer is looking to make a similar move elsewhere in the North County.
"The locally owned grocery company has looked into other locations in the North County, but at this time will not comment on possible future sites," the news release said.
The first Spencer's Fresh Market opened in Santa Maria in 1996. The former Arroyo Grande location at 1464 E. Grand Ave. is now home to a Smart & Final warehouse store.
