A new Albertsons supermarket will open in San Luis Obispo on Wednesday, filling a grocery shopping void for neighbors near downtown and in the city’s Johnson Avenue area.
It’s the fifth Albertsons in San Luis Obispo County. Other locations include a store at Foothill Boulevard in San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles. The store will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. The company declined to say how many employees were hired but noted that each store generally averages about 50 employees.
“The new San Luis Obispo Albertsons is your neighborhood grocery store,” said Steve Sistler, store director. “Shoppers will see our focus on fresh with a dash of local flavor in each of the departments.”
The store will feature such items as Central Coast Seafood, Cayucos oranges, Cal Poly eggs and a selection of local wine, craft beer, organic, natural and gluten-free products. As well, customers will find a bakery, fresh salad bar, sushi bar, floral department and an in-store Starbucks. A Starbucks is also located in the Foothill Boulevard store.
“That’s the beauty of it. We’re always looking to see what the customers want and listening to what the customers are saying,” said Lilia Rodriguez, public affairs manager.
As part of the grand-opening celebration, Albertsons will make donations to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo and the Women’s Shelter Program of San Luis Obispo County. A Customer Appreciation Day will be held Saturday, featuring local growers and vendors who will offer a variety of in-store samples, games, entertainment and prizes.
It took the Idaho-based company several months to renovate the store. The company declined to disclose how much it spent to improve the space. Albertsons has more than 600 locations in 16 states.
