Atascadero business owner Jan Wolfinger’s artwork was selected as the logo for the city of Paso Robles’ 125th anniversary next year.
Nineteen local artists submitted 35 designs for a chance to win $1,500 and become the official logo designer. The artwork will be put on materials to promote the city’s incorporation in 1889.
Wolfinger’s winning selection depicts an iconic city oak tree in black against a backdrop of earth-tone hues.
“The 125 leaves on the oak symbolize all of the history that comes together to support and define (the city),” Wolfinger told The Tribune. “The color scheme is organic and calls to mind the vineyards and rich agricultural history of Paso.”
The city’s anniversary next year will be celebrated in a yearlong roster of special events, which, so far, include a New Year’s Eve kick-off party on Dec. 31, an anniversary celebration on March 11, 2014 and a wrap-up event Dec. 31, 2014.
Public votes helped narrow down the field of contestants to 10 finalists. The initial batch of entries included everything from youth drawings of landscapes to traditional logos displaying city icons such as wagon wheels, cattle and vineyards.
A panel of local marketing professionals ultimately chose the winning design.
Wolfinger has owned and operated Jan Wolfinger Graphic Design Inc. in Atascadero since 2004. Her work has included wine labels and marketing materials for clients worldwide, according to her website, www.janwolfinger.com.
