Longtime local musician and music teacher Steve Hilstein’s Drum School 101 is getting a bigger location, expanded classes and a new name: Music Motive.
Hilstein and his wife, Stefanie, are opening Music Motive at 3440 S. Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo, which will offer a range of musical instruments, accessories and instructional materials, as well as classes in guitar, piano, drums, bass, woodwinds, brass and strings.
The Hilsteins also own Music School 101 in Paso Robles and Drum School 101 in Nipomo. They owned the Drum Circuit, at 280 Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo, until they sold the retail portion to employee Howard Emmons in 2007.
Drum School 101 continued to lease classroom space there until its current move and transformation to Music Motive.
Never miss a local story.
So what was once a 200-square-foot music teaching operation is now the 1,700-square-foot school. “We were looking for a larger space to grow into, and we found the perfect space,” Steve Hilstein said. The school currently employs about 12 instructors, and he expects to see that number grow.
Music Motive is the home of the Bucket Busters, drummers who play on buckets and trash cans. All proceeds from Bucket Busters performances benefit music lessons for kids in need.
Music Motive’s grand opening will take place Sept. 17 with live musical performances.
