When a pair of downtown Atascadero building owners saw a slump in the commercial rental market, they decided to bring in business themselves.
Diane Helbert and Danny Edwards of SLO County Properties Inc. opened Brú Coffeehouse on May 5 in 1,500 square feet.
The space has been restored in the historic 1929 Keetch building at 5760 El Camino Real.
The pair built the urban-style cafe featuring leather couches and a music-inspired environment on the building’s ground level by merging two storefronts to create one space.
The duo created an arched hallway with a barrel ceiling lined in walnut and refinished the oak floors, Helbert said.
The cafe features a meeting room for groups and a small stage for live music, which is featured on most Friday nights.
Patrons can sip coffee and drinks in the urban living-room style interior with the couches and coffee tables.
On the menu are a variety of espresso drinks, coffees, beer on tap, pastries and breakfast burritos.
The cafe currently has eight part- and full-time employees.
A grand opening is planned for Saturday with live music and drawings.
