This week, San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter volunteer Ellen Perryess introduces us to calico kitty Reba.
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul is unawakened.” — Anatole France
Caring for those that are lost, injured or abandoned is how the day begins and ends for animal shelter staff and volunteers. The rewards are many, and the heartbreaks genuine.
Helping pets such as Reba makes it all worthwhile.
Reba is a friendly, outgoing 5-year-old calico with gorgeous markings. She was a stray, but given her Rubenesque figure, it’s clear she once was someone’s pet. Though she has been at the shelter for a month, no one has fallen for her beautiful patchwork coat and heartfelt purr.
About 5,000 stray and homeless dogs and cats are taken to the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter each year.
In recognition of all the good work animal shelters and welfare organizations do, all San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter pets will be half-price this Saturday at the Shelter Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In addition to adoption fee discounts, enjoy shelter tours and learn about volunteering as well as opportunities to foster shelter animals.
Want to donate? Acrylic fleece blankets, Friskies canned cat food and monetary donations to the shelter’s Animals Requesting Friends (ARF) fund will be greatly appreciated.
For more information about Reba, ID No. 195560, call the volunteer line at the San Luis Obispo County animal shelter at 781-4413 or visit http://www.sloanimalservices.com.
The Animal Services shelter is at 885 Oklahoma Ave., off Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo.
The adoption fee is $80 for cats and $105 for dogs, plus a $25 county license fee for dogs if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents. The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, basic vaccinations, microchip, eligibility for a free veterinarian check, new collar and ID tag, and a carrier for cats.
