Baby bird rescue training
Pacific Wildlife Care is experiencing high numbers of baby birds at their rehab center in Morro Bay. Most of the babies have been orphaned due to ill-advised springtime tree/bush trimming. Over the next few months, if you have two to four hours a week to volunteer to help baby birds call 543-9453. At the recording, hit the pound (#) key to leave a message with your name, phone and availability. Training is available. (p.s. Remind friends and neighbors to always check for nests before doing any spring trimming!)
Rattlesnake avoidance training for dogs
A course on rattlesnake avoidance training for dogs — featuring live rattlesnakes that have been disabled from biting — will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 1 in Paso Robles. During the event individual training sessions are given to each dog, which takes less than half an hour per dog. During the sessions, dogs are taught to avoid the sight, sound or the smell of rattlesnakes. By doing this, the dog will be able to recognize any of these clues to a rattlesnake’s presence individually even if the other clues aren’t present. Cost is $95 per dog; reservations required. Space is limited. Register at www.manpaw.com or call 523-3432.
The Friends of the Morro Bay Police Department are holding a benefit K9 Walk-a-Thon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 22 at the city park in Morro Bay. The event includes a 1K or 1.5K walk, police K9 demonstrations (with a special appearance by MBPD K9 Xello), photo booth, adoptable dogs, contests, vendors and more. Registration is $20 and includes a goodie bag. For more information, call 772-6225.
