‘Sometimes little things can be big things. Just one bite from a tiny flea can be unbearable for your pet. Fortunately this suffering can be easily prevented. Yet dogs and cats regularly come to the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter tormented by fleas.
“When Mench and Dixie arrived at the shelter, it was clear their respective owners had done nothing to protect them.
“Mench was underweight, and his coat was matted except where he had chewed himself raw because of fleas. With the care he received at the shelter, Mench’s coat is on the mend; he’s now a fluffy guy who enjoys companionable walks and being loved.
“Dixie’s a sweet medium-sized Dutch shepherd mix. Dixie loves people and enjoys the company of children. Dixie’s coat has greatly improved but, because of a lifetime of neglect, a full recovery is months off. This means, for the short-term, Dixie will need periodic medicated baths.
“To help the caring heart who adopts Dixie, the nonprofit ASAP is donating Dixie’s medicated shampoo, three months of flea control medication and an easy-walk harness.
“All Central Coast dogs and cats need help to fend off fleas. Here’s what owners can do:
Regularly brush and bathe your pets.
Vacuum household rugs and change pet bedding weekly.
Give your pet monthly flea protection medication.”
