“Friend, Buddy, Pal — these are familiar pet names. They speak of the bond between humans and their animal companions. Pets with these names especially tug at your heart when their owners turn them in at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services Shelter.
“Currently we have Friend and Buddy. Friend is a gentle German shepherd and Buddy is a big 10-year-old orange and white tabby. Buddy’s story is especially sad as his owner died and no relative or friend could take him.
“It’s not unusual for pets to come to the shelter due to the death of an owner, but it is avoidable. By talking with family and friends, pet lovers can create a safety net for their pet. Additionally, pet owners can identify a caretaker in their trust and provide financial assistance to help with future pet expenses.
“Buddy needs a special adopter because Buddy has limited eyesight and needs to be an indoor cat. Buddy negotiates familiar places well and once settled into a new home, he’ll enjoying giving and getting attention. To help Buddy find his special person, a good Samarian has paid half his adoption fee.
“The shelter is currently full of wonderful pets who have fallen on hard times. To help them all, the shelter is hosting an Adopt-a-Pet from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Cats and kittens will be out front ready for adoption. More cats and dogs will be inside waiting to meet their match.
“Be a friend: include your pet in your trust. Find a buddy: adopt.”
