‘What’s not to love about Baxter? He’s a Labrador retriever-Greyhound mix who gets along with all the dogs he’s met and loves people. Baxter is house-trained, knows all his commands and comes when called. And though a senior, Baxter still runs, jumps and plays with the best of them.
“There are many middle-aged and senior dogs like Baxter — ranging from pint-sized to full-sized — filling the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter. This is a worry because all the foster homes are full and more dogs are coming in. Sadly, county shelters like ours can’t refuse a stray or surrendered county pet regardless of space; if there isn’t an open kennel, space must be made, and older pets are especially vulnerable to euthanasia.
“Shelter volunteers and staff invite you to celebrate ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ by coming to an Adopt-a-Pet this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SLO County Animal Shelter. Dogs will be on the front lawn to meet-and-greet prospective adopters; many more dogs and cats will be inside awaiting their chance to shine.
“As an added boost, all seniors, like Baxter, qualify for a $35 adoption fee rebate.
“Open your heart and open a kennel by adopting a shelter dog. By adopting one, you help two: the one you take home and the one who gets the open kennel. Baxter and his compatriots — be they seniors or young — will bring a grateful and loving heart into your life.”
