During a visit to Greece several years ago, Janice Peters remembers snapping a photo of two lambs — one white, one black — sitting in a bicycle basket.
Then, as she petted the lambs, the bicycle’s owner informed her that the cute, cuddly critters were destined to become Easter dinner.
“I haven’t eaten lamb since that moment in Greece,” the former Morro Bay mayor recalled with a chuckle.
Peters is best known for her extensive collection of pink flamingos, but she has a special affinity for lambs, those adorable heralds of springtime.
Never miss a local story.
“They’re so sweet and they’re so cute,” said Peters, whose Zodiac star sign is Aries, the Ram. “There’s such an innocence about them.”
Peters’ love affair with lambs began when she and her parents visited Great Britain in the 1970s during lambing season.
“We loved all the darling lambs rollicking through the fields,” said Peters, who bought a toy crafted from warm lamb’s wool.
Soon, she and her mother were competing to see who could collect the cutest lambs. Peters won.
Her collection currently includes about a hundred lambs, ranging from fluffy stuffed animals to china figurines.
“The biggest problem with them is dusting them,” Peters joked. “Dusting does take a long time, and it really makes me think, ‘Do I want another one?’”
