For many, driving the country roads surrounded by vine-striped hills is part of the charm of wine tasting. But if you prefer your tour to be a walking one, here’s where to go.

Anglim Winery (Thursday-Monday, 740 Pine St., 805-227-6813), focusing on Rhne varietals, pours its wine at the 100-year-old train depot, a couple blocks south of the downtown square and just across from the newly opened Hice Cellars (Friday-Sunday, 821 Pine St., Unit D, 805-237-8888).

North of the square, Silver Stone Wines (Wednesday-Sunday, 827 13th St., 805-226-2788) offers a "tasting gallery" with wine, hand-crafted jewelry and original oil paintings all made by owners Deborah and Dan Kleck. Midlife Crisis Winery pours its wines at Wines on Pine (Thursday-Monday, 1244 Pine St., Suite A, 805-237-8730). On the square in the historic Mastagni Building, you can taste the wines of Arroyo Robles (Wednesday-Monday, 739 12th St., 877-759-WINE) and shop for gifts and picnic supplies.

The Wine Attic (1305 Park Alley, 805-227-4107), with various day and evening hours, is a blended retail shop and tasting bar with a secluded courtyard. A tapas-style menu features imported cheese plates, artisan bread and specials such as shrimp cocktail, potato galettes on baby lettuce and paella. Saturday evenings feature Jazz at Jan’s.

Vinoteca Wine Bar (closed Mondays, 835 12th St., 805-227-7154), open in the evenings, has sofas, overstuffed chairs, high pub tables, an 18-foot granite bar and a cozy room especially for couples. There are wines for tasting or by the glass, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, an international beer list and much wine paraphernalia for sale. Every Wednesday a local winemaker arrives to pour, chat and share a barrel sample.
