Local CD pick: The Shamblers

By Patrick S. Pemberton

Lucas Ohio’s commanding voice, confident phrasings and poetic lyrics are sure to draw comparisons to Jim Morrison. But the band has enough jazzy, loungy influences -- and Ohio’s ability to sing falsetto -- to boast an original sound. A testament to their dedication, the trio shelled out $10,000 to create this self-produced CD, renting studio time and hiring guest musicians. (After all, who wouldn’t want to have flute in a rock song?)

The result is a rock-blues-jazz hybrid with warm and sultry grooves and a clean product that proves the professional recording studio is still better than ProTools in a garage. Both retro and fresh, this new band’s music should appeal to young hipsters and aging hippies in and beyond the Central Coast. Lots of potential here.
