Local jazz lovers can look forward to a new music festival this spring.
Grammy Award-winner Poncho Sanchez will headline the inaugural SLO Jazz Festival in May in San Luis Obispo. A Mexican-American conga player, salsa singer and Latin jazz artist, he and his band won a Grammy for best Latin jazz album in 1999.
According to a news release, the nonprofit festival will feature “year-round events, lectures (and) special performances” by “world-class jazz artists to celebrate jazz — an original American art-form — in all its artistry and imagination.”
The festival’s title sponsors are Mercedes-Benz and the city of San Luis Obispo.
Never miss a local story.
“Bringing the jazz festival to fruition is a dream coming into reality,” said Scott Andrews, founder and executive director of SLO Jazz Festival, in the news release.
The SLO Jazz Festival takes place 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 17 at Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, 751 Palm St. in San Luis Obispo. Tickets go on sale in early March.
