A new documentary delves into the power of classical music to change people’s lives.
“Following the Ninth: In the Footsteps of Beethoven’s Final Symphony” will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Fremont movie theater, 1025 Monterey St. in San Luis Obispo, followed by a question-and-answer session with director-writer Kerry Candaele. An after-party will be held nearby at Luis Wine Bar.
Never miss a local story.
In a news release, the film festival’s artistic and marketing director, Wendy Eidson, described “Following the Ninth” as “an inspirational story about the power of music and human resilience in dark times.”
Filmed in 12 countries on five continents, the documentary tells the story of four people whose lives have been transformed by Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” and its message of brotherhood and unity.
“Following the Ninth” takes viewers from China, where students played the Ninth Symphony over loudspeakers during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, to Chile, where women imprisoned under Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s regime sang the symphony in torture prisons.
Candaele, who grew up in Lompoc, is the filmmaker behind “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price” and “Iraq For Sale: The War Profiteers.” He also collaborated with his brother, Kelly, on the documentary “A League of Their Own,” about their mother’s experiences in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League; it was later adapted into a feature film.
Admission to Wednesday’s screening of “Following the Ninth” is $12, or $10 for students, film festival society members and Festival Mozaic donors. For more information, call 546-3456 or visit www.slofilmfest.org.
