The 2014 Miss California Mid-State Fair contestants pose in front of the Carnegie Library in Paso Robles. The pageant will start at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15 (the day before the fair opens) on the Ford Frontier Stage at the fairgrounds. Admission is free.
Zoe Zepp, 18 School: Cal State University at Monterey Bay freshman Hobbies: Surfing, swimming, water polo, cooking, playing guitar and going to amusement parks Activities: Girl Scouts, NCA Swim team, USA water polo, 4-H and Paso Robles High School International Club Achievements: Principal's honor roll, perfect attendance award, PRHS Girls varsity water polo team captain, coach's award for varsity swimming, Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, Miss Pre-teen California first runner-up and finalist in Miss Pre-teen America Platform: "Save the Cayucos Pier." Zoe wants to get the community involved with Cayucos Pier Project in raising the needed money to keep the pier alive. She is planning on setting up a booth during the fair to inform citizens about the plight of the Cayucos Pier and help support the restoration of this historical treasure.
Taylor Mae Lindquist, 18 School: Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Hobbies: Showing livestock, milking goats, cheese making, exercising, teaching agriculture, playing the flute, reading, hiking, cooking, sewing and welding Activities: American Dairy Goats Association, San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau, California Mid State Fair Junior Fair Board, and Templeton FFA. Achievements: Cal Poly Dean's List, state FFA scholarship, American Dairy Goat Association scholarship, Independent Grape Grower scholarship, Templeton FFA scholarship and Booker Brothers scholarship Platform: "FFA? Get Agucated!" Taylor plans are to let the educate the community what FFA is all about. With help from FFA advisors she would like to showcase FFA at local farmers markets along with an educational booth at the Fair.
Summer Botts, 17 School: Paso Robles High School senior Hobbies: Softball, water polo, babysitting, horseback riding, diving and spending time with her family Activities: Paso Robles High School International Club, Paso Robles High School Leadership, 4-H and Paso Robles Girls Softball League, the Jr. Giants Achievements: Commissioner of Communication for Paso Robles High School, varsity water polo, varsity diving team, county achiever in 4-H, vice president of Estrella 4-H, CPR certified and babysitter certified Platform: "Youth Sports." Summer plans to have a informational booth on organized sports offered. And "hands on" with sports equipment.
Shasta Wright, 18 School: Paso Robles High School senior Hobbies: Playing musical instruments. She plays the flute, marimba and base drum. Activities: High school band and color guard Achievements: Honor roll, principal’s honor roll and her team placed second in parade. Platform: "Music Together." Shasta plans to inform people about music education and how it helps with children’s abilities in learning other subjects. She will have a booth where children and adults can play different instruments.
Sarah Groves, 19 School: Cuesta College Hobbies: Hiking, rock climbing, cooking, being with friends, going to the beach and attending concerts Activities: ANAD (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders) Achievements: Best of Show and several first place for computer drafting Platform: "It’s not what you wear." Sarah will have an informational both on how to protect and prevent sexual assaults.
Rebecca Sligh, 18 School: Templeton High School graduate Hobbies: Sewing, dancing, singing, acting, swimming, modeling and shopping. Activities: Templeton's Women in Business, Templeton FFA, and Main Street Dance Co. Achievements: FFA Emerging Agricultural Tech. award and modeling in Twist Fashion Show Platform: "Depression isn't the way." Rebecca plans to have an informational booth and to partner with Transitions Mental Health to have information and resources for teens and young adults who struggle with depression.
Lauren Rodrigues, 20 School: California State University, Fresno Hobbies: Photography, volunteering, water polo and bike riding Activities: Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, Cal State Fresno women's club water polo, FFA and SATO (student athletic trainers organization) Achievements:Historian of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, Paso Robles Rotary Scholarship, collegiate athlete — Fresno State Women's Water polo, Star Chapter Farmers degree (FFA), sheep project, completed Nike women's half marathon, and editor of the PRHS Yearbook Platform: "CASA 'Court appointed special advocate'" Lauren plans to have a booth where adults can receive information about the organization.
Laura Henderson, 18 School: Paso Robles High School graduate Hobbies: Gymnastic, dance, swimming and hiking Activities: California Gold Shockwaves Achievements: PRHS cheerleading stunt captain, first place in three competitions with the California Gold Shockwave, honor roll Platform: "Dance: A movement toward a better health." Laura plans to implement a fitness class along with an informational booth on fitness and health.
Dianna Dawson, 18 School: Cuesta College Hobbies: Cheerleading, dirt bike riding, showing livestock, drawing, reading, wave boarding, snowboarding, baking, swing dancing, modeling, swimming, hiking and exercising. Activities: Templeton FFA, National Hillclimb Association, Junior Fair Board, Templeton High School Varsity cheerleading, and schools cite council. Achievements: Varsity cheerleading captain, FFA proficiency award South Coast Region for emerging agricultural mechanics, National Hill climb Association Champion, FFA English breed beef champion, FFA AOB reserve lamb champion, Templeton FFA Animal Science Star Senior. Platform: "MOTO — vation."
Devin Corea, 17 School: Paso Robles High School graduate Hobbies: Surfing, snowboarding, wake boarding and hiking Activities: Paso Robles High School cross country and track and field, water polo, soccer, high school journalism class, leadership, International Club, Crimson Crew, AYSO youth referee, coaching, Santa Lucia 4-H Platform: "4-H Healthy Living." Devin will have an informational booth to bring awareness to the program provided through 4-H to teach youth about healthy lifestyle.
Denise Carigo, 20 School: Cuesta College Hobbies: Photography, cooking, dancing, sewing, arts and crafts, traveling, and volunteering. Activities: San Luis Obispo County 4-H, Girl Scouts, Atascadero Youth Football League, Atascadero FFA Alumni, the American Breeders Association, CMSF Jr. Fair Board. Achievements: 4-H Young Achiever Award, San Luis Obispo County 4-H All Star, numerous FFA and Girl Scouts awards.Platform: "Wellness Kitchen Expansion." Denise wants to bring awareness to the community of the wellness kitchen is and what they do to help patients and their families that are facing an acute illness.
Amanda Oliver, 18 School: Paso Robles High School graduate Hobbies: Hiking, running, cross fit and swimming. Activities: Year-round club swimming; high school varsity swim team; high school band; senior drum major; FFA poultry. Achievements: Lyons Club Sportsmanship Award, PRHS swim team MVP, PAC 7 all-league honors, and senior drum major. Platform: "Adoption of Animals with Woods Humane Society." Amanda wants to inform people about pet adoption, micro-chipping, and spay and neutering their animals.
