The free event is modeled after the San Mateo Maker Faire, founded by the people behind MAKE and CRAFT magazines in 2005. The annual event promotes creation, invention, recycling, art, engineering and technology through “Maker” booths offering do-it-yourself demonstrations, art exhibits and interactive performances.
The SLO Mini Maker Faire began in 2013 when Cal Poly Materials Engineering Chair Kathy Chen approached SLOMA Exhibitions Director Ruta Saliklis with the idea.
This year’s event will feature over 40 Makers, including many Cal Poly students. The Makers will host exhibits of unusual tools and machines, green technology, sustainability, alternative energy, bicycles and more.
