The latest trend on Facebook is called “Filling Facebook with Art.”
A friend posted: “Click ‘like’ and I will assign you an artist. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know their work; just Google the artist and choose an image of the one you like most, and post it on your wall with this message.”
She posted an image from UK street artist Banksy and later assigned me actor and film director Terry Gilliam.
It took me a minute to remember that in addition to belonging to the troupe of Monty Python’s Flying Circus actors, Gilliam also created the cut-out animations for the show. I have brushed watercolors over a fair number of photocopies for crafty projects and in the back of my mind know that Gilliam is one inspiration.
Gilliam was a good choice for me and someone I enjoyed spending a bit of time researching in order to feed the Facebook machine.
Looking at the prompt again — get artist name, find an image, post it — made me think, “Hey, that’s what I get to do most Sundays in The Tribune.” So it was extra fun to see my friends sharing art and artists.
Terry Gilliam illustrates the point that artists take up other professions as well. The latest local example I came across is Carmen Fojo who retired in 2007 after 32 years as a civil engineer and then returned to her original love of drawing and painting.
Fojo says in press materials that many of her images of nudes “make themselves” in 25 minutes or less. The results are captivating and most are casually displayed unframed at GALA.
“I have tried to go into my studio and edit them in order to perfect them to no avail. Therefore, I accept them with no judgment, and plan to do it again with the same feeling of expectation,” she says.
Be sure to visit the GALA office on your next Art After Dark outing. It’s a homey spot to grab a comfy seat, chat and plan your next stop.
