Voice-over-Internet protocol, or VoIP, will be the topic of a panel discussion at the August meeting of Softec, the Central Coast Software and Technology Association.
VoIP is an efficient way of routing voice transmissions across networks such as the Internet.
Making phone calls via the Internet was a frustrating experience 10 years ago when we were using 56K modems, but things improved a bunch with high-speed Internet.
Now callers can make good quality VoIP-to-VoIP phone calls worldwide at little or no cost.
VoIP calls to phones on the traditional telephone networks are also becoming less expensive.
Panelists include Jay Hennigan, manager of voice and data network infrastructure for Santa Barbara-based Impulse Internet Services; Steve Gran, founder of telecom firm Cencom in San Luis Obispo; Jeff Buckingham, founder of Call America in San Luis Obispo and Steve Pollack, vice president of technology for Farm Credit West, a major agricultural lender.
Tom Lebens of the law firm of Sinsheimer Junke Lebens and McIvor will moderate.
The meeting is set for Wednesday at the Pelican Point Restaurant at 2555 Price St. in Pismo Beach.
Networking starts at 6 p. m., dinner follows at 7.
The meeting is open to the public. The cost of dinner is $35. RSVP with your name, company name, phone number and how many are in your party. For more information e-mail rsvp@softec.org or visit www.softec.org. More events this week
