DMV cancels Saturday hours

The monthly Saturday half-day opening at the San Luis Obispo Department of Motor Vehicles has become another victim of the state budget crisis. The 53 DMV offices throughout the state that open the third Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon — including the San Luis Obispo office on South Higuera Street — will be closed Aug. 16, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced.

Mike Marando, a spokesman for the DMV, said he did not know whether the policy would carry over into future months.

Marando confirmed that workers who come in on Saturdays are on overtime, and the governor’s executive order, issued last month to cut back government expenditures, bars overtime.

Marando said he did not know how much money the closures would save the state, or how many people would be affected.

Marando noted that the DMV offers many customer services online, at www.dmv.ca.gov.
