A car sheered off a fire hydrant in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, flooding nearby streets with thousands of gallons of water.
The man, whose name was not available, was reportedly driving west on Tank Farm Road near Broad Street around 5:30 p.m. when he crossed into southbound lanes for unknown reasons and slammed into a fire hydrant on the south side of the street, according to San Luis Obispo Police.
The red Dodge Neon he was driving rolled over landing on its left side before the driver got out of the car, firefighters said. The man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. He did not appear to have suffered life-threatening injuries, according to witnesses.
No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
Firefighters stopped the geyser by 6:30 p.m. after about 4,500 gallons of water per minute escaped. Police explained that the water must be turned off gradually to prevent from rupturing valves connected to the water system.
Eastbound Tank Farm Road was temporarily closed.
